Internment in Northern Ireland—the detention of suspects without trial—officially ended on December 5, 1975, when the last 46 internees were released. The policy was introduced on August 9, 1971, under "Operation Demetrius" and continued for over four years, during which 1,981 people were detained (1,874 Catholic/Republican and 107 Protestant/Loyalist).
