About Dr. Spock: BENJAMIN MCLANE SPOCK (1903–1998) became a national celebrity after the publication of his classic parenting guide, The Commonsense Book of Baby and Child Care, in 1946.1 By the time of his death at the age of 94 years, the book, reprinted as Baby and Child Care, had been translated into 42 languages and had sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.2 Along with being a pediatrician and author, Spock was a vocal opponent of war and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, committed to securing a healthy future for the young patients he saw in his practice.

As part of his ongoing efforts to end the Vietnam War, Spock ran for president as a member of the People's Party in 1972 on a platform of disarmament, free university education and health care, and the legalization of abortion and marijuana. He made it on to the ballot in 10 states and won nearly 80 000 votes overall. In 1970, he published Decent and Indecent: Our Personal and Political Behavior.
